So, President Trump is imposing a 25% surcharge on softwood lumber going into the U.S. from Canada. Sure enough, the surcharge will cause job losses in Canada. We have other markets we can pursue, however. On the other hand, Trump’s measures to help U.S. forest workers is only hurting U.S. home buyers. This surcharge will have to be paid by someone in the U.S. That ultimately is the person looking for a home: a newly built or renovated home. That often includes first-time home buyers who will now pay considerably more that house they have been saving to buy. In the end, Canada loses a little but many U.S. home buyers will lose a lot more.
